What is gender equality?

Gender equality refers to a condition in which women and men have the same rights, responsibilities and opportunities in all areas of life, including employment, family, education and political participation. This concept implies that differences in treatment between genders should not be based on prejudice or discrimination, but on fairness and justice, recognising and valuing the different experiences, skills and perspectives of each individual, regardless of gender.

In practice, gender equality is achieved through:

• Equal access to resources and economic opportunities.
• Fair representation in positions of responsibility and decision-making processes.
• The elimination of gender-based barriers and prejudice in every social context.
• The promotion of policies and practices that support work-life balance.

Gender equality does not mean that women and men must be identical, but that their rights, responsibilities and opportunities should not depend on gender.
